FleetOwner has posted a series of 3 articles covering the truck parking problem in the U.S. and technology is easing the pre-trip planning that should have included safe parking locations but that usually does not occur as shippers failed to provide parking spots and drivers often opted for public paid or free parking spaces.

He had been on a 2-week roundtrip from Vermont to the West Coast and, because of his careful planning, was able to find parking each night. He said, “Less experienced drivers or drivers who work for carriers that put a lot of pressure on them [to reach their destination on time] tend to have trouble finding places to park.” (NTSB Special Investigation Report -Truck Parking Areas.)”
From the article: “Operating a truck costs about $75 an hour, Wells said. “If we can save them an hour and the stress of finding parking, paying $12-$15 for parking seems like nothing,” he said. ” The cost of doing business includes parking costs and shippers and drivers need to quit pushing these costs to the public and victims of crashes. If you live in the big city you pay for expensive parking, why should the industry expect a free ride, especially shippers not providing safe and free parking areas. Why have cities and counties not required safe parking as part of shipping centers endangering their citizens? Pre-plan your trip to include safe parking locations and use technology to ease your planning. If you must park on the streets or on-ramps understand that U.S. underride guards are only effective at 25 mph so parking on a higher-speed roadway is likely to result in a fatal crash versus property damage only on a 25 mph road.
